Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most breathtaking natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Northern Tanzania. Formed over two million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed, the crater is now the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Often referred to as “Africa’s Garden of Eden,” the crater floor covers approximately 260 square kilometers and is home to an incredible concentration of wildlife. Within this natural enclosure, you can spot the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the rare black rhino — often in a single game drive. Ngorongoro offers diverse habitats including open grasslands, acacia forests, swamps, and Lake Magadi, which attracts flamingos and other bird species. Because wildlife remains in the crater year-round, it provides one of the best chances in Tanzania to see a wide variety of animals in a short time.
